Fans can’t believe what David Raya said about his incredible double save against Atalanta

David Raya was the hero as Arsenal drew with Atalanta in the Champions League.

David Raya’s comments after producing a stunning double save against Atalanta have got fans talking.

Mikel Arteta’s men travelled to Bergamo on Thursday night as they kickstarted their 24/25 Champions League campaign against Europa League holders Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium.

It was largely a dull affair as Arsenal failed to break through Atalanta’s stubborn defence.

In the second half, with 48 minutes on the clock, the hosts were awarded a penalty after Thomas Partey fouled Ederson inside the 18-yard box.

Mateo Retegui stepped up but saw both his penalty and rebound brilliantly saved by David Raya.

Speaking after the match, the Spaniard said: “It was just a penalty and I was lucky to go the right way. I was unlucky that the rebound went straight to him [Retegui] but I was quick enough to get up and save it. It is fantastic to be able to keep the clean sheet and to help the team to get at least a point.”

Reacting to his comments on social media, one fan said: “Wouldn't call anticipation luck only thing that would be is the header being too casual with the right side to aim for but he shouldn't call himself lucky. Fantastic instinctual goalkeeping fair play to him.”

Another tweeted: “Very humble. God bless.”

A third fan added: “What a man, brilliant saves but still think it’s luck!”

Someone else wrote: “Humility at it's best.”

Raya continued: “As we suspected, it was a tough match. Not the nicest to watch. We started really, really well and we were really commanding the game.

“We gave a lot of ball away and couldn't get any rhythm. There are a lot of positives and there are a lot of things for sure to improve.”

Arsenal will now head back to England and prepare for their mouth-watering Premier League clash against champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon
