Fabrizio Romano insists Liverpool “still have a chance” to secure a new deal with their 26-year-old star.

Liverpool may have enjoyed a largely successful summer transfer window, but the club still finds itself facing some unfinished business that has left supporters with mixed emotions. Despite securing several key signings, the Reds were unable to complete every deal on their wishlist. One of the biggest disappointments came with their failed pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. The move reportedly collapsed at the final stage of negotiations, leaving manager Arne Slot and the recruitment team short of one of their top defensive targets.

The focus has now shifted to the future of Ibrahima Konate, whose situation is becoming a growing concern at Anfield. The French centre-back has just entered the final year of his current contract, which places Liverpool in a difficult position. Under FIFA regulations, once January arrives, Konate will be free to open discussions with clubs outside of England, and Real Madrid are said to be closely monitoring developments. Madrid’s interest has been well-documented, particularly given their recent track record of securing top talents from Liverpool, most notably Trent Alexander-Arnold earlier this year.

Reports earlier this week revealed that Konate had rejected Liverpool’s latest proposal for a contract extension. While this has sparked anxiety among fans, there remains a degree of optimism inside the club. Sources suggest Liverpool are still hopeful of reaching an agreement that would tie Konate down to a long-term future at Anfield. The situation is far from settled, however, and negotiations appear to be at a standstill.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool will have several chances before the January window opens to reopen talks and try to secure Konate’s signature. The club is keen to avoid a repeat of past mistakes, where delays in negotiations allowed rival clubs to swoop in and capitalize. For Liverpool, time is now of the essence, as Real Madrid continue to circle and position themselves as a strong contender should Konate choose not to commit.

It is understood that discussions between the player and the club had previously been close to reaching an agreement last year. However, fresh complications and disagreements over certain details have since caused talks to break down. These unresolved issues have now created a cloud of uncertainty over Konate’s immediate and long-term future.

For Liverpool’s hierarchy, the risk is clear: losing another key defender, especially one entering his prime years, would be a major blow to the stability of the backline. For fans, the uncertainty only adds to the frustration. Until a resolution is found, the matter remains unresolved, with Konate’s name firmly on Real Madrid’s radar and Liverpool under pressure to act swiftly.
