Mikel Arteta confirms Arsenal star will miss Manchester City clash

Arsenal manager has ruled out a key player for the Premier League clash against Manchester City, with David Raya also a major doubt

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has admitted he remains “uncertain” over David Raya ’s fitness ahead of Sunday’s crucial Premier League showdown against Manchester City, while confirming that Ben White will miss the fixture.

The Gunners, locked in a fierce title race with Liverpool, have struggled to maintain their consistency this season despite suffering only two league defeats. With injuries and suspensions affecting squad depth, Arsenal will be eager to secure a statement victory over City to bolster their title challenge.

Raya, who was unavailable for Arsenal’s midweek win, travelled with the squad but was ultimately not deemed fit enough to feature on the bench. Teenager Jack Porter was named as the backup goalkeeper instead. However, there is no concern over a long-term absence, and expectations remain that the Spanish shot-stopper will be available for the upcoming league fixtures.

The 29-year-old has been in outstanding form this season, playing a key role in Arsenal’s defensive solidity before missing Wednesday’s 2-1 victory over Girona. Despite speculation over the nature of his injury, Arteta remained tight-lipped when addressing the media after the match.

Speaking in Friday’s pre-match press conference, Arteta provided a cautious update on Raya’s availability: “David, we’re still uncertain,” he said. “We have another session tomorrow. We have 48 hours, so we will have to see.”

Arteta later confirmed that Raya’s issue is muscular but refrained from providing further details. Meanwhile, he also ruled out Ben White for Sunday’s match, stating that the defender remains several weeks away from a return.

White has been sidelined since undergoing minor knee surgery following the November international break. Reports suggest he had been playing through discomfort earlier in the 2024/25 season, affecting his performances. Although White has resumed light training, he has yet to fully integrate with the first-team squad and is not considered match-fit.

In White’s absence, Jurrien Timber has been deployed at right-back, while Thomas Partey has occasionally filled in when required. Arteta recently hinted at White’s progress but emphasized that the club will not rush his return.
